Muonium addition reactions in the gas phase : Quantum tunneling in Mu + C 2 H 4 and Mu + C

چکیده
The reaction kinetics for the addition of the muonium (Mu = Jl, + e) atom to C2H4 and C2D4 have been measured over the temperature range 150-500 K at (N2) moderator pressures near 1 atm. A factor of about 8 variation in moderator pressure was carried out for C2H4, with no significant change seen in the apparent rate constant kapp , which is therefore taken to be at the high pressure limit, yielding the bimolecular rate constant k Mu for the addition step. This is also expected from the nature of the Jl,SR technique employed, which, in favorable cases, gives kapp = k Mu at any pressure. Comparisons with the H atom data of Lightfoot and Pilling, and Sugawara et al. and the D atom data of Sugawara et al. reveal large isotope effects. Only at the highest temperatures, near 500 K, is k Mulk H given by its classical value of2.9, from the mean velocity dependence ofthe collision rate but at the lowest temperatures kMulkH ~ 3011 is seen, reflecting the pronounced tunneling ofthe much lighter Mu atom (mIL = 1/9 mp )' The present Mu results should provide accurate tests of reaction theories on currently available ab initio surfaces.

Dynamics of the reactions of muonium and deuterium atoms with vibrationally excited hydrogen molecules: tunneling and vibrational adiabaticity.
Quantum mechanical (QM) and quasiclassical trajectory (QCT) calculations have been carried out for the exchange reactions of D and Mu (Mu = muonium) with hydrogen molecules in their ground and first vibrational states. In all the cases considered, the QM rate coefficients, k(T), are in very good agreement with the available experimental results. In particular, QM calculations on the most accura...
متن کاملMuonium emission into vacuum from mesoporous thin films at cryogenic temperatures.
We report on muonium (Mu) emission into vacuum following μ(+) implantation in mesoporous thin SiO(2) films. We obtain a yield of Mu into vacuum of (38±4)% at 250 K and (20±4)% at 100 K for 5 keV μ(+) implantation energy. From the implantation energy dependence of the Mu vacuum yield we determine the Mu diffusion constants in these films: D(Mu)(250 K)=(1.6±0.1)×10(-4) cm(2)/s and D(Mu)(100 K)=(...
متن کاملبررسی تاثیر کلرید آمونیوم (NH4Cl) و اندازه ذرات پودر آلومینیوم در تولید ویسکرهای نیتریدآلومینیوم(AlN) بهروش نیتریداسیون مستقیم
In this study, AlN whiskers were prepared in a tube furnace at 1000˚C for 1h with 500 nitrogen gas flow. Al powders with particle size of 3 μm and 45 μm and NH4Cl were used as raw materials. SEM, TEM and XRD analysis were used to characterize AlN whiskers. The results showed that the diameters of AlN whiskers would range from 140 nm to 340 nm if different amounts of NH4Cl and 3 μm Al p...
متن کاملRate coefficients and kinetic isotope effects of the X + CH [ subscript 4 ] CH [ subscript 3 ] + HX ( X = H , D , Mu ) reactions from ring polymer molecular dynamics
The MIT Faculty has made this article openly available. Please share how this access benefits you. Your story matters. Abstract The thermal rate coefficients and kinetic isotope effects have been calculated using ring polymer molecular dynamics (RPMD) for the prototypical reactions between methane and several hydrogen isotopes (H, D, and Mu). The excellent agreement with the theoretical rate co...
